This Powerhouse radio is a rare German tube radio manufactured by Telefunken Germany (TFK) in 1961. It contains 8 tubes with 6 AM and 9 FM circuits. This Allegro has 3 speakers and a built in AM ferrite antenna as well as a built in FM loop antenna. The sound is as incredible as it looks! It has bass and treble tone adjustments, as well as pre-set tone pushbutton controls! It also has DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) connectors for external speakers, and a record player input which accepts any audio input such as Bluetooth, IPAD etc. with the use of a proper DIN cable.
The radio measures 23x14x9 in.
This cabinet is in ORIGINAL condition...NOT restored but polished to a beautiful shine with over 60 years of aged patina. The last picture will show some very typical cracking in the original lacquered finish but not in the wood itself. This only adds "character" and in my opinion does not detract from the overall beauty of this fabulous piece of history.
I removed the chassis from the cabinet and cleaned and dusted everything, I tested the tubes, capacitors and resistors and anything that was not in acceptable ranges were replaced. The pushbutton assembly was cleaned with DeoxIT D5 and works nicely. The original finish and metal trim were hand polished and the original speaker grill cloth cleaned. I try to maintain as much of the original radio as possible.
The magic eye tuning tube was changed with a fresh NOS equivalent so it shines bright and responds well to station changes.
I pick up many FM stations even known weak stations play well. I receive some AM and SW stations but not many. I believe it's the area that I live in. I have many tube radios and have difficulty tuning in stations with all of them on these bands.
1961 Telefunken Allegro 5183W
Nothing has been done to this radio that is not described here. THIS IS NOT A FULLY RESTORED RADIO but rather an original vintage item that has been inspected and repaired as necessary to make it functional. As with all of my radios, I have played this radio for hours several days a week before I put it up for sale. I do my best to describe every item in detail. Vintage radios were manufactured decades ago in a time of relaxed electrical safety. Many early radios were made with the metal chassis electrically connected to one side of the power cord. This can give you a strong shock if you happen to touch the radio and anything else that is at grounded at the same time. In addition, tubes can get very hot and cause serious burns if touched accidently after the radio has been running for a while. The danger is minimal if the complete cabinet, back, and knobs are in place and no metal parts are exposed. Vintage Radio Electronics, whether restored or un-restored, are by nature hazardous due to their voltage, design, heat output and age. They should not be operated unattended or for great lengths at a time. Any operation, repairs or other adjustments are done at your own risk. None of the radios sold at this shop have been modified to modern standards.
