FAQ

Here are the questions I am most frequently being asked.

  • How safe are vintage radios?
Vintage radios were manufactured decades ago in a time of relaxed electrical safety. Many early radios were made with the metal chassis electrically connected to one side of the power cord. This can give you a strong shock if you happen to touch the radio and anything else that is at grounded at the same time. In addition, tubes can get very hot and cause serious burns if touched accidently after the radio has been running for a while. The danger is minimal if the complete cabinet, back, and knobs are in place and no metal parts are exposed. Vintage Radio Electronics, whether restored or un-restored, are by nature hazardous due to their voltage, design, heat output and age. They should not be operated unattended or for great lengths at a time. Any operation, repairs or other adjustments are done at your own risk. None of the radios sold at this shop have been modified to modern standards.
  • What is your philosophy on restoring vintage radios cabinets?
I love antiques and to me its awe inspiring to see a radio that works and looks as it did 50 to 75 years ago. I try to do as little as possible to the original finish unless it's absolutely a basket case and requires a complete restoration. I like seeing signs of wear and use over the decades. When a radio is stripped down to bear wood and totally refinished you no longer have an antique. I know there are many people who differ on this but this is my opinion and I don't often take on a full restoration project.
  • How to you handle the electronic repairs?
I never alter the original circuitry of a vintage radio. I visually inspect and test every component and if something is out of specification or looks' worn I will replace it with a modern component or new old stock. I always start with an untouched working or semi-working radio and go from there.
  • What is your return policy?
Returns are accepted only within 7 days of receipt. Please contact me as soon as possible if there is a problem with the radio. The buyer is responsible for return shipping costs and any loss in value if an item isn't returned in original condition.
  • What if I have a problem with my order or its damaged in transit.
After enjoying this hobby for over 25 years, I realize that postal workers aren't the most gentle people around. I keep this in mind when packaging delicate radios, however things still may happen. Most issues can be resolved easily like making sure all tubes are seated well. Insurance is also included with my free domestic shipping. It's important to me that you are completely satisfied so please reach out to me with any issues or problems.
  • Do you guarantee your work?
My goal is to make sure you are satisfied with your purchase or restoration. Unless otherwise noted in the description, "sold as-is", I will work with you to solve any issues. If we can't solve the issue via phone or email simply return the item to me, at your cost, and I will repair the radio at my cost.
